What is a bilge pump used for?
Jun 25, 2026
A bilge pump is a device designed to remove excess water from the lowest point of a boat: the bilge. Most of the time, water in the bilge comes from everyday sources. Rainwater or spray from waves can accumulate while boating, while wash-down water may pool in the bilge during cleaning.
Is a bilge pump necessary?
A bilge pump is a system put in most boats to keep excessive water from pooling inside of the boat. Considering you want your boat to float above water, this is a necessary component to have on board.
If your boat encounters a leak, takes on water from rough seas, or has a plumbing or hull breach, the bilge pump becomes indispensable. You may need to manually activate the pump (if it's not automatic) to quickly remove excess water while addressing the source of the problem.
